MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

OCTOBER 2006 Conferences!
Dear Parents,

The first month or two of school seems to fly by every
year. As teachers we start with just a list of names
and in two months we have begun to get a glimpse into
the uniqueness of each child. As you get a chance to sit
down with one of your child’s teachers and conference
this week please remember that we are all parents too.
We regularly sit on the other side of the desk and
more than anything look forward to this first
conference as a conversation between partners who
care about your child. We value your unique
perspective, and welcome hearing your questions. We
want to know what goals you have for your child and if
you have any concerns about his/her development,
adjustment to school, etc.

Listening respectfully and asking lots of questions are
two of the tools we use most with the children, it is a
good model for us as adults as we work together in the
best interest of each child. Children can sometimes be
quite different in a classroom  environment than they
are at home. Over the years I have heard more than
one parent ask, “Is this my child you are describing?”

Accordingly it is important for us to hear how your
child is at home and for us to share our initial
observations at school. This essential communication
helps piece together the whole picture of a child.
This early in the year teachers are still getting to
know your child and are watching for some of the
following things: adjustment (separation from parents,
comfort in a new group environment, etc.), ability to
assimilate routines and rules, self-help skills, ability
to express basic needs, participation at group times,
and social adjustment and skills. Thanks you in advance
for taking the time to partner with us, we are better
together!!

Respectfully,
Katy C, Merrell MEd.
