SEPTEMBER 2007
Helping your roses bloom
“Happiness is not what makes us grateful. It is
gratefulness that makes us happy”. I came across
this quote recently and it reminded me of how
grateful I am to work for and with such a talented,
dedicated group of women. I also feel very lucky to
get the chance to know and work with so many
wonderful children and parents. Together we have
made Norfolk Children’s School one of the best
programs I have had the opportunity to be
associated with in the past twenty plus years.

Accordingly it was very frustrating to come to the
decision this summer that we just did not have the
financial resources to proceed with the next step in
the NAEYC re-accreditation process. As a “stand
alone” school, one without a corporation, or church,
or community organization backing it, the expenses
were more than we could afford. We have been
accredited for over 15 years and were the first
school to become accredited in Norfolk County! Our
plan is to remain in the self-assessment process,
move forward with the implementation of our
Overall Improvement Plan, and reassess our
financial position later this year.
“What lies behind us and what
lies before us are tiny matters
compared to what lies within us”

These included; the Family Surveys that went home last spring, teacher surveys,
observation tools that were done by each teacher in another classroom, etc. The Program
Portfolio that covers every policy and procedure is 99% complete and you are most welcome
to stop by the office and look at any of our updated policies and goals!

We also want all families to know that in addition to our efforts to comply with NAEYC
standards we are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care
and follow all their Early Childhood Program Standards and Curriculum Guidelines. These two
books are also available in the office for any parent wishing to take a look at them! We will
continue to reflect on every aspect of our program and work to make it better. As always
we appreciate your feedback and support!!

I’ll close by sharing a piece that Mrs. Conca and I hoped to read to our class at orientation-
but ran out of time. It is wonderful “food for thought” no matter how old your child is!
“When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it
as rootless and stemless. We treat it as a seed, giving it the water and nourishment
required of a seed. When it first shoots up out of the earth, we don’t call it immature or
underdeveloped; nor do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We
stand in wonder at the process taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each
stage of development. The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it blossoms.
Within it at all times it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process
of becoming, and yet at each stage, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is”.

We look forward to helping all your roses blossom this year…respectfully,
