DECEMBER/JANUARY CLASSROOM UPDATE
December was a very fast month and it is hard to
believe that January has arrived. During December,
we began our winter themes which we will continue
in January. Stories, art, and science will focus on
snow and ice. We will begin discussing animals such
as polar bears and penguins. Our dramatic play area
has been transformed into a polar cave and we will
learn about what animals do to keep warm and their
different habitats. Small groups are going quite
well! During this time we generally read a story and
then have a hands on activity such as an experiment
like “Sink or Float,’’ or a matching game, ?Missing
Tray, etc. We also review our calendar, days of the
week,and weather.
NORFOLK CHILDREN'S SCHOOL, 23 Union St., Norfolk, MA 02056 508-528-1970
We will need to keep ourselves warm in the days ahead! We do go outside most
days so please send in snow pants, coats, hats, boots, and mittens every day. Please
be sure EVERYTHING is labeled and if possible send mittens rather than gloves.
Three and four year olds have difficulty maneuvering their fingers into gloves and
teachers have trouble maneuvering 160 fingers into 16 pairs of gloves!! Winter
dressing can be a challenge but it also provides a great learning opportunity.
Patience (both ours and theirs!),practice and perseverance pays off. We try to
allow the children the time and guidance they need to put on as much as they can
themselves. After practice and a great deal of reassurance, you will be amazed at
how much they can do for themselves by the end of the winter. They always look so
pleased with themselves when they tell us “Look what I did!” Also, children do not
need to wear their boots into school because we do require them to take them off
once they get inside the classroom. We find it much easier if they wear their shoes
in (unless of course it is very snowy out) and then only have to put their boots on to
go outside. Unfortunately we can not keep extra shoes or boots at school due to a
lack of space as we share our classroom cubbies with the 3 day children. If your
child needs to wear boots to school, he/she may bring slippers to wear inside the
classroom.
Our “Brown Bear” book continues to go home each day with a different child. We
hope you are enjoying reading it together and learning about the friendships your
child has made this year.
We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and wish you all the best in 2010!!
