December 2011/January 2012
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a a wonderful holiday
season. We are very happy to welcome two new friends to our
class--Isabella Lord and Kayla Potuzak who joined us in January.
December and January have been exciting months with many
winter themes. We decorated trees and painted with evergreen
branches. We also made snowflakes, snow people and stars. In
December, we made cinnamon ornaments and the children even
decorated their own wrapping paper. In case you notice less art
work coming home, we have begun to save some of the children’s
work for their portfolios. We look forward to sharing all of their
work with you during the March parent/teacher conferences. It is
always amazing to see how much they have grown during the year.
The children now come into school and identify their name card to
“sign in” in the morning. Some of the children can tell you all the
letters in their name and others are beginning to recognize
certain letters. We applaud all that they can do on an individual
basis and with repetition thy quickly learn this skill and even begin
to recognize their friend’s names.
Our Cafe transformed into a shoe store and the children have
been measuring feet, matching pairs of shoes, paying for shoes, and
fitting them into boxes. We have great salespeople! We also
discuss concepts of colors, pairs, matching, and sizing(Are they too
big or too small? Which are the biggest? etc.) all while having fun!
Of course the cash register is still the favorite part of the store!
We will soon be trading in the shoe store for a Post Office.
In Science, we recently had an experiment to show how
blubber keeps animals such as polar bears warm and protected
from the ice. The children touched ice with their plain hands and
then protected by “blubber” (a bag of shortening in this case)to
observe the difference in temperature. We also told a story
about a polar bear in the zoo who changed colors (food coloring)
and how he magically became white again.
As the weather seems very unpredictable this winter,we
recommend keeping all outdoor winter clothes in backpacks so we
have them if needed. The children do not need to wear their boots
into school in the morning unless it is particularly snowy as it
takes them quite a while to switch from boots to shoes and
interrupts their socializing!! A gentle reminder to please send
MITTENS (not gloves) and label as much as possible as sometimes
the children are not sure which things are their own. Thank-
you!! Debi & Donna
